These DIY Wooden Crate Shelves are a super quick and easy way to add dimension to your wall décor! I utilized these shelves in my bathroom, but they would really look great in any room.

They are sturdy enough to be used for many different things, such as books or records and come in a variety of different sizes.  I chose to use them for some added decor.

Step 1: Select and Purchase crates

Depending on the space you are looking to fill, you could choose larger or smaller crates. While in the store, I played with the different sizes they had available.  I placed the crates on the floor in different arrangements. I choose to use two crates of the same size and one larger crate.

The larger wooden crate is 15 3/4″ x 9 1/4″, and the two smaller crates are 12″ x 10″.

Step 2: Stain the crates & Let dry

To stain each wood crate, I utilized General’s Finishes stain.   I actually used a different color than I normally do, and went with Java to get a bit darker of a finish! I first used a disposable paint brush to get in between the slates of the crate.  Then, used rag to apply the stain over the flat surfaces and a second rag to wipe it off.

TIP: I kept my wiping rag handy while using the disposable paint brush in between the slates.  This way I could quickly wipe any drip

Step 3: Hang on the wall

To hang the wooden crates on the wall, I grabbed my drill, a few 2 inch screws, a stud-finder, and my level.

I first found the studs in the wall.  I knew I wanted to secure one of the two screws in each crate in a stud.  Once I had located the studs, I positioned the first wooden crate shelf in place upright.  I used two screws placed in between the slates and my drill to screw it into the wall.

For the second and third crate shelves, I positioned the crates together and decided to flip one so they wouldn’t look too uniform. I didn’t want any of the three crates to be perfectly lined up.

Step 4: Decorate

I had so many decorating ideas once the shelves were hung! The shelves needed to be dual purpose – a place to put cute home décor while also providing storage for bathroom essentials!

I find myself mixing it up regularly with different things I come across while shopping!
