DIY Kid's Decorated Initial

These DIY Decorated Initials were another fun and easy project I did with my kids. I plan to use these initials that they painted and decorated as added décor on the bookshelves in their play room.
My oldest (4) loved this, but for my youngest (2.5) his interest was not kept for very long periods with this one. So while this could be a quick and easy one to two day project, it ended up being a bit longer for us.
Tools & Materials
Tools:
- Assorted Paint Brushes
- Hot Glue Gun
Materials:
- Paper Mache Letter
- Wooden Letters
- Acrylic Paint
- Pompoms
- Pipe Cleaners
- Small Toys
- Anything else you might want to use to decorate your letters with!

Step One: Glue Wooden Letters to Large Letter
I decided to use some smaller wooden letters that I had come across to actually spell out my boys’ names on each of the large initials.
I use the hot glue gun and just glued the letters in to place.

Step Two: Paint the Initial

Before handing over the initials to the kids to be painted, I laid out some plastic over our table. Then I just passed off the letters to the kids! I used a paper plate and just put a small amount of the different paint colors on each plate.
I set out an assortment of paint brushes and just let the kids paint and cover their initial however they wanted!
With he paper mache letters, this could also be done with washable markers for a most controlled mess and easier clean up.

Step Three: Glue on Additional Decorations
This step could really be anything your imagination comes up with! For us, I grabbed some goggly eyes, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, and pom poms that we had on hand.
I also had grabbed a few small toys from the dollar store. My oldest loves dinosaurs and my youngest loves monster trucks, so I was lucky enough to find some cute small toys for them to glue on.
I had the kids tell me where and what they wanted to add to the painted initials and then just used my hot glue gun to secure everything.

This was a cute fund project and while these letters aren’t something I’d set on my bookshelf in my main space (like I would the kids’ painted pillows) they are perfect for the bookshelves in the playroom. The kids are so proud of them and are happy to have them set out among their toys and games.
