How to Mix Metals

Wondering how to mix metals? You’re in the right place!
Mixing metals in a bathroom can feel wrong – but it’s not! There is nothing wrong with keeping your metals consistent if that is the look you want, but mixing metals can give a more layered and designer look to a space.
Using the same metal throughout can make a space feel more builder-grade. By using different tones and finishes, you can make your space feel more intentional.
So how do you pick the right metal combination? I’ll lay out a couple of rules I like to follow in order to get the right mix!
Rule 1: Chose a dominant metal
Chose a metal to be the main metal throughout the space. This will likely be one of the primary fixtures (think shower faucet or sink faucet) and then will be repeated more often in the space than your accent metals.

Rule 2: Add in one or two accent metals
Chose to mix in one or two accent metals. Typically for a smaller space, it’s recommended to only add in one accent metal. Having said that – my basement bathroom is on the smaller side and I still chose to mix in two additional accent metals.. so just go with that works in your space!

Rule 3: Repeat each metal at least twice

Ensure each metal is repeated throughout your space at least twice. Your dominant metal should be repeated more frequently than your accent metals!
Rule 4: Consider the metal finish
As long as you are using different colors, it’s completely fine to use different finishes! For example, a polished chrome pairs great with a matte black!
It is not recommended to mix metals in the same family – for example, do not mix chrome and stainless as these are both in the silver family.
Rule 5: Sprinkle

Make sure you sprinkle the different metals throughout the space! Don’t use all matte black finishes for the shower and then chrome for the vanity & light. Mix the different metals throughout the space to create a cohesive look!
